Grandmothers Buffet Reveal

This accidentally Posted yesterday, so those of you who were able to read my terrible spelling and grammar pitfalls before I could delete it, call yourself blessed. For everyone else, you only get to read the corrected and edited version.....enjoy!

I finally finished this buffet. Do you remember this one?.....
I showed it way back in..um lets say.......May.

Well let me rephrase that.... This has been finished for a while but I'm finally posting the finished product.
It has only taken me three months......*Sigh*
I took this out of my grandparents barn and I'm sure one of my family members will promptly inform me as to who owned this before my grandmother....
It could have been something she just picked up. I don't know for sure, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. ( :) This would be a chance for one of my cousins to pipe in)
My Grandmother did mention she always wanted to fix it up but just didn't get the chance.
I hope she doesn't mind that I painted it instead of refinishing....some people just scream at the thought of painting wood.....I'm obviously not one of them. *WINK*

Some fixing was in order for this one and so my Hunny replaced the door trim and rope trim by matching (as best that he could) the original at Home Depot. You will notice in the picture that I had removed what was left and it was a blank slate.

I originally wanted to stain the top a dark walnut but the veneer was too badly water damaged and chipped. So instead of pulling the veneer off I opted to paint it white and will have a piece of glass cut to protect the top from a stray water glass or set of keys.

Before                                                                                         After

This piece has great lines and curvy legs and is HEAVY!
So heavy in fact, that I had a hard time dragging it around the garage. Wow, they just don't make them like this anymore.

I sanded her down, primed her with Kilz Original...the wax made it into this photo but is the last step...(:

I used 2 coats of Behr paint in Swiss coffee....my favorite white by far.
It is not a pure white but very creamy in color and has held up well on other pieces that I have painted.I'm not normally a fan of a heavy distressing but I decided to grow a brave wild hair and with a 220 grain sanding block I sanded until I got the "look" I wanted.
I really wanted this to have a worn, prairie feel. Something you might find on an old homestead in the 30's so on a whim I glazed it with a chocolate glaze to show off the details and finished it off with Minwax Paste Finishing Wax.
She turned out lovely, don't you think?

I tried convincing my Hunny to let me put his flat screen on this and he said "no,"....... very firmly I might add!

Man, I really wanted to use it as an entertainment center, but he does not, at this time apprecitate the feminine qualities of this one.

Yet!
*SMILE*  *BLINK,BLINK*

I'm hoping he will change his mind...... it would look amazing in our family room.

You can see how the glaze brought out the details in this photo.

New hardware finished her off and she has found a home as a place to hold bills and cookbooks, pens and take-out menus.

And one more time.......

Another great job! I have a piece of furniture upstairs just waiting for me to finish it and darn it I have to because it doesn't look like anyone else is going to. :)
