Busy Bee's

I have mentioned in a previous post that I had Honey Bee's a-comin'....Well they are here! This was my birthday present from my Dad.

The interesting thing is that these come in the mail....Just like the photo above, and you get a very frantic call from the Post Office when they do arrive......and they would like you to come and pick them up ASAP. It is like they are going to get out and kill someone or something.

Oh I know they can Kill some people....

 It is just so cool....to hear them in that mesh box.

The buzzing is VERY LOUD!

My Dad came to set these last week. It is an interesting process so I though I would show you how it works.

First off....put on your Oompa-Loompa Suit....

I'm so ready for Mike T.V. to tap me on the shoulder when I put this thing on...Weird, I know.

 

For the record this is not me handling the bees, I'm behind the lens. I'm a little nervous when I'm around them, so I let my dear old Dad do the dirty work.

He takes the can of syrup out of the box....

Next, you take the queen out....You can't see her because she is in a little mesh box that is covered with workers.



Trust me she is in there.

This is the Most Important step to a successful hive.....

You must, I repeat, must play Macho Man and show how you let bees crawl all over you....

Just sayin'....

I did not get a picture of my macho Dad us pulling the cork out of the queen's little box and exposing a little gum drop plug that the workers will eat until they have an opening for her to get out of....it got a little harry for me at that moment and I might have dropped my camera and ran away screaming like a girl....

Oh yeah, I am a girl.

No explanation needed.

We put the Queenie down in the box and proceeded to DUMP the bees into the hive. Yes, you dump them. Very technical here.

After dumping them we put the lid on and a very heavy rock to hold the top down.....

It has been an unusually cold, and windy spring here on the prairie and as of yesterday morning we still had frost on the ground...so my poor bees have had nothing until these were in full bloom....



They are one of their favorite foods by the way......

Dandelions are no longer hated, but needed here.

And come winter, I should have quarts and quarts of yummy honey to sweeten my morning Java.

Oh it is the best.....
